Mirror pool: operation, price and stainless steel design

A mirror pool is a basin where the water level is flush with the surrounding decking and spills over into a discreet peripheral collection system. Its appeal is architectural: to reduce the visual break between the water surface, the ground, and the landscape. However, its success depends on very concrete elements: top edges, supports, hydraulics, a balancing tank, maintenance access, and the management of water loss. Stainless steel allows for a precise and custom design, without eliminating the need for these studies.

This guide explains how a mirror pool works, how it differs from other overflow types, the factors that determine its cost, and the points to check before launching a residential or hospitality project.

Key points

  • The mirror effect seeks visual continuity around the entire perimeter; an infinity overflow toward the horizon may involve one or more sides.
  • The reflection varies with the wind, swimmers, lighting, and water movement: it is not a constantly motionless surface.
  • The buffer tank and collection system must absorb level variations without undesirable overflow.
  • The precision of the overflow edge must be verified with the structure and its supports, not just during manufacturing.
  • A relevant price compares a complete scope: basin, hydraulics, civil engineering, cover, and installation.

Mirror, overflow, or skimmer: what is the difference?

The mirror pool is a form of overflow pool. On a rectangular basin, the effect is generally sought on all four sides; for a free-form shape, it is referred to as a peripheral overflow. The water is collected in a gutter, under a grate, or in a slot integrated into the design of the decking. The precise finish depends on the construction system.

The panoramic overflow, often called an infinity pool, composes the landscape differently: one or more edges allow water to flow down to a collection point located below. The other edges may remain conventional. A skimmer, finally, draws water through an opening in the wall; its water level is not defined by an overflow edge.

Three configurations to compare based on the desired effect
Configuration Architectural reading Design points
Skimmer Water level below the coping, with variable height depending on the device Placement of returns, inlets, and cover
Panoramic overflow Continuity toward a view on one or more sides Overflowing edge, collection below, noise, and buffer volume
Peripheral mirror Continuity between the water surface and the decking Perimeter levels, collection, cleaning access, and wave management

A photo taken in calm weather shows a favorable situation, not a permanent promise. Swimming, a waterfall, a massage jet, or a gust of wind will alter the reflection. One must decide if the primary goal is contemplative, family-oriented, or athletic: all three uses can coexist, but not always with the same surface appearance at the same moment.

How does the hydraulic circuit of a mirror pool work?

In a standard configuration, the overflow water flows into the gutter and then by gravity into a buffer tank. A pump sends it toward filtration and treatment before it returns to the basin. Some systems integrate the buffer into the gutters; others use a separate tank. Manufacturer solutions, such as those presented by ABPool, illustrate this diversity: a separate tank is not the only possible architecture.

The tank receives, in particular, the water displaced when swimmers enter. The calculation must also examine waves, the volumes that flow back down when the system is off, and operating levels. An arbitrary percentage of the pool volume does not replace this sizing. Gravity piping and the necessary access points must be reserved before the structural work is finalized.

Functions to anticipate in the mirror system
Element Function Question to ask the designer
Overflow edge Distribute the water sheet across the intended edges How will its levels be controlled under load?
Peripheral collection Collect the overflowing water How to clean hidden parts and remove leaves?
Buffer volume Absorb level variations What usage and shutdown scenarios have been calculated?
Level regulation Manage top-ups and safety features How to detect an unusual top-up or probe malfunction?
Filtration and inlets Treat and distribute water How are actual flow rates and circulation homogeneity verified?

The sizing must simultaneously satisfy the needs of treatment and overflow. A more powerful pump does not automatically correct an irregular edge, insufficient collection, or a poorly designed network. It can even increase noise and energy consumption. What does stainless steel mirror pool construction allow?

Stainless steel lends itself to custom geometries, fine edges, and the integration of equipment. The pool design can coordinate stairs, benches, gutters, wall penetrations, and potential transparent walls. Its prefabrication can also facilitate certain construction sites, subject to access and the assembly method selected.

However, stainless steel is not rigid. The structure, its stiffeners, supports, and assemblies must be calculated for the expected loads and movements. Temperature variations and interfaces with the building must be taken into account. The goal is not to contrast immobile stainless steel with concrete that would necessarily deform: any structure must be designed with its load-bearing system.

The choice of grade depends in particular on the water and the environment. IMOA highlights the importance of chlorides and an adapted specification. 316L is not a general authorization to use saltwater. For a coastal site, one must distinguish between external sea spray and the composition of the pool water, and examine both.

Where can a mirror pool be installed?

In a garden or in front of a façade

The framing of the reflection deserves study from the spaces actually occupied: living room, terrace, bedroom, and pathways. Orientation, prevailing wind, and the proximity of plants influence usage. Also, plan for separate management of surface water so as not to direct runoff and dirt into the pool's collection system.

Indoors

The project must combine the pool with ventilation, dehumidification, and the room's materials. The sound of the collection system can become noticeable in a quiet space. Views at eye level and lighting considerations help avoid glare: a seductive rendering on a perspective is not enough to validate daily comfort.

On a rooftop or deck

The weight of the water remains decisive, regardless of the pool material. Feasibility requires a study of the load-bearing structure, supports, building waterproofing, water drainage, and maintenance access. The buffer volume can also represent a significant load. Our dossier rooftop pools: the stainless steel solution details this approach.

The Oceania Lille project illustrates another challenge: the construction of a stainless steel basin in a former bank vault, with elements adapted to the access points and then assembled on-site. This case provides information on the intervention method in a constrained site; it does not in itself constitute a reference for a mirror finish.

How is the price of a mirror pool determined?

There is no reliable price per square meter without a description of the installation. An outdoor pool at ground level and a pool on a deck can share the same dimensions while requiring very different studies, logistics, and ancillary works. The budget must therefore be broken down before any comparison.

Items to include in a mirror pool quote
Item Content to specify Variation factors
Basin and edges Structure, finish, stairs, collection Dimensions, shape, number of edges, and architectural details
Hydraulics Buffer tank, pumps, networks, regulation Technical room location, usage, levels, and network lengths
Treatment and comfort Filtration, disinfection, heating, automation Private or public use, temperature, and operating season
Building and safety Supports, waterproofing, decking, safety devices, cover Condition of existing site, location, and interfaces between contractors
Installation Transport, handling, assembly, testing, and training Access, lifting, phasing, and site constraints

Ask for the list of inclusions, exclusions, and options, as well as the presentation of the offer both excluding and including tax. The file price of a stainless steel pool in 2026 provides additional context to help structure the discussion, but only a studied quote commits a specific scope of work. It is also necessary to reserve a budget for operation, not just construction.

Insert an actual photograph of the balance tank or the technical room, removing any potentially visible confidential data.

What maintenance and consumption should be anticipated?

Recycling recovers the overflow water, but does not mean there is no water consumption. Evaporation, splashing, filter cleaning, sanitary top-ups, and potential anomalies must still be considered. Wind, temperature, wet surfaces, and the cover influence the balance. No overconsumption or savings rate applies to all installations.

Electricity consumption depends on flow rates, pressure drops, settings, and operating times; heating has its own balance. A potential reduced mode must be designed in conjunction with water treatment and applicable rules. The presence of a mirror design does not authorize universal programming or automatic shutdown of filtration outside of bathing hours.

For pools falling within its scope, the order of December 19, 2025 regulates the balance tank, surface skimming, and recycling, with provisions and exceptions depending on the installation. These rules should not be applied indiscriminately to a family pool.

The maintenance plan must address the gutter as much as the pool itself: removing deposits, checking sensors, inspecting access points, and monitoring top-ups. An unexplained increase in consumption or a change in noise levels warrants a diagnosis. Masking a drift with more water or power does not resolve its cause.

How to prepare for and receive a mirror pool?

The project owner benefits from setting priorities before focusing on details: visual effect, swimming area, number of users, desired cover, and acceptable noise level. These choices guide the study and make it possible to distinguish essential requirements from options.

Useful milestones to secure the project
Stage Elements to validate Expected result
Preliminary project Plans, levels, access, usage, structure, and technical location Feasibility shared among stakeholders
Execution studies Levels, supports, networks, reservations, cover, and maintenance Interfaces defined before manufacturing
Filling/Start-up Watertightness, overflow distribution, settings, and safety features Documented tests with potential corrections
Project handover Manuals, plans, instructions, maintenance, and training Operation understood, beyond the photographic result

Visual acceptance must take place under defined conditions: stabilized water level, reference flow rate, and identification of external disturbances. Also plan for behavior during shutdown and restart, as well as representative usage scenarios. These observations allow for an evaluation of the complete system rather than just one favorable moment.

Frequently asked questions about the mirror pool

Does a mirror pool always overflow on all four sides?

On a rectangle, this is the common configuration. More generally, the principle is a peripheral overflow with a flush water line. Freeform geometries and mixed projects require a precise description of the edges involved.

Does the reflection remain perfect while swimming?

No. Water movement, running equipment, and wind animate the surface. The mirror design describes primarily an architectural and hydraulic composition, not a guarantee of permanent stillness.

Must the balance tank be separate from the pool?

Not necessarily: some solutions integrate the balancing volume into the collection system. Available space, sizing, and maintenance access determine the appropriate solution.

Is a cover compatible with a mirror pool?

Yes, provided that the cover, its supports, the edges, the potential housing, and operating modes are designed together. The actual usage and the safety function claimed by the selected device must be verified.

Can an existing pool be transformed into a mirror pool?

This must be verified on a case-by-case basis. Adjusting levels, collection, balance storage, networks, and structural compatibility can involve significant work. A survey of the existing structure precedes any serious estimate.

Why ask for a study rather than a standard price?

Because the visible edge depends on a set of features that are often invisible. The study links the desired effect to site constraints and allows for the comparison of offers that truly address the same project.
