Cold Plunge 2026: The Ultimate Buyer's Guide (Prices, Models, Cryotherapy)
To choose your cold plunge, start with the intended use, then compare the tub, the cooling system, the water treatment, and the installation: the displayed minimum temperature or the price of the tub alone is not enough. This guide brings together the purchasing criteria for a cold plunge and what we know, with caution, about the difference between cold plunging and cryotherapy for sports recovery.
Read in 30 seconds
- Use first. A private tub and equipment used successively by customers or members require neither the same sizing nor the same sanitary framework.
- Cold plunging is not cryotherapy. Immersion in cold water and a cold gas chamber are two distinct techniques; their temperatures are not comparable.
- Effects should be read with caution. Studies on recovery show variable results; no medical promise can be drawn from equipment.
- Cold does not disinfect. The cooling system, filtration, and disinfection serve different functions; stainless steel makes cleaning easier but is not antibacterial.
- Comparable performance. Ask for cooling capacities at the same air and water temperatures, and distinguish between temperature drop and maintenance.
- Installed price. Compare an installed and operable cost, with a maintenance scope and written warranties per component.
- Medical advice if in doubt. Illness, medical history, treatment, or doubt about fitness: consult before any practice.

What use to define before choosing your cold plunge?
The number of users and the organization of sessions weigh more than the tub's dimensions alone. One person at home and several customers who follow each other all day do not require the same equipment. To prepare a consultation, describe the attendance, the period of use, the planned level of supervision, and the expected availability.
Write a realistic usage scenario
Indicate who will use the tub, where it will be installed, and who will take care of maintenance. In a second home, the restart after an absence may count more than remote control. In a hotel, the priority may be staff access without going through customer areas. For a gym, it is often the succession of users during peak hours.
Also ask for the stated volume to be specified: total capacity to the brim, useful volume at the operating level, or real volume with one user. These values are not interchangeable: they condition comfort, operating weight, and water renewal.
Private, shared, or collective: do not rely on the word "individual"
A one-person tub accessible successively to the members of an establishment is not automatically a private tub. In France, the sanitary framework is determined by the actual use and configuration. Have the classification and applicable provisions confirmed by competent stakeholders, including the ARS for the sanitary aspect, before choosing a solution.
For a professional project, establish the operating program at the same time as the architectural program: it is easier to reserve a suitable technical room from the start than to later look for where to house additional treatment. Our dossier dedicated to the professional cold plunge for hotels, spas, and clubs details this case.
Cold plunging or cryotherapy: what are we talking about?
Cold plunging and chamber cryotherapy are not interchangeable. The first exposes the body to cold water; the second uses an extremely cold gaseous environment. Heat exchanges, installation, and risks differ. The word "cryotherapy" covers several techniques: it must be specified which one is offered.
| Technique | Exposure mode | What to distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Cold plunge | Partial immersion of the body in cold water, head out of the water. | Temperature, immersed depth, water movement, and duration. |
| Whole-body cryotherapy | Exposure in a dry cold room, head included depending on the device. | Cold production technique, exposure conditions, and supervision. |
| Partial-body cryotherapy | Chamber in which the head remains outside. | Distinct device, especially for gas management and ventilation. |
| Local application of cold | Cooling limited to a body area. | Specific indication and device; no equivalence with a full plunge. |
The Inserm expertise of 2019 describes notably the differences between whole body and partial body. This vocabulary avoids mixing research on different exposures, or transposing to all methods a result obtained with only one.
A tub at a few degrees is not equivalent to a chamber at −110 °C
There is no simple conversion between these two exposures. The medium temperature is not the body temperature: the exposed surface, time, movements, clothes or protections, and the user's characteristics influence the exchanges. A statement of the type "such immersion replaces such chamber" would require comparative tests on the same result, in comparable people.
What do studies show about sports recovery?
The effects depend on the desired result; there is no guaranteed benefit for all athletes. Some research observes an improvement in the sensation of muscle soreness or certain tests, while others do not find any advantage compared to the chosen control. Feeling less sore, regaining performance, and developing muscle are three different results.
| Study | Question and population | Prudent teaching |
|---|---|---|
| Nasser et al., 2023 | Recovery after an effort simulating football in 12 semi-professional players. | Favorable results compared to rest were also observed with a placebo; context and expectations matter. |
| Gustafsson et al., 2025 | Performance after effort in 40 young male footballers; prolonged follow-up of a subgroup. | No advantage of cold plunge over placebo for the measured performance results. |
| Roberts et al., 2015 | Repeated immersion after a strength training program in young trained men. | Muscle adaptations were attenuated: immediate recovery and long-term progression are not confused. |
These trials do not represent all populations or all sports, and their research protocols do not constitute recommendations for self-practice.
Cold plunging after strength training
It is not automatically required, especially when muscle gain is a priority. In the Roberts trial, repeated immersion immediately after sessions attenuated certain adaptations to the strength program, compared to active recovery. A close tournament and a muscle development cycle do not ask the same question: the arbitration belongs to the athlete with their support staff and, if necessary, a healthcare professional.
| Situation | Question to ask | Point not to confuse |
|---|---|---|
| Close competitions | What result do we want to follow between two events? | Sensation of recovery and measured performance. |
| Strength training cycle | Is the planned routine consistent with the adaptation objective? | Immediate comfort and muscle progression. |
| Unusual pain | Is a clinical evaluation needed first? | Perceived relief and resolution of the cause. |
| Wellness use | What experience is sought and with what supervision? | Personal preference and demonstrated medical benefit. |
And chamber cryotherapy?
In its 2025 point, Inserm recalls the limits of evidence and the risks of whole-body cryotherapy. A plausible mechanism or a convincing testimony is not enough to establish an effective treatment. It is therefore not rigorous to present the chamber, nor by extension the cold plunge, as a proven treatment for multiple diseases.
What usage precautions to keep in mind?
There is no duration–temperature pair that guarantees safe practice for everyone. Laboratory protocols concern selected and supervised participants, not challenges to reproduce at home.
- Enter gradually, without jumping or diving: entering cold water can abruptly disrupt breathing and strain the cardiovascular system.
- Keep your head out of the water and do not combine immersion with breath-holding or hyperventilation.
- Do not practice alone; the exit must remain simple and immediately accessible.
- Stop in case of malaise, dizziness, chest pain, or unusual breathing difficulty, and ask for help; serious or persistent symptoms require urgent medical attention.
- Warm up gradually after exiting: regular practitioners remain exposed to cold shock and hypothermia.
The absence of water does not mean the absence of risk: Inserm notably mentions burns and other adverse effects of whole-body cryotherapy.
What cold plunge format to choose: portable, self-contained, or custom-made?
The format depends on your need for mobility, availability, and integration. A regular installation requires thinking about cleanliness, connections, and after-sales service.
| Configuration | Main interest | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable tub, occasional filling | Mobility and low footprint when not in use. | Stability, access, cleaning, water renewal, and handling. |
| Tub with ice addition | Cooling without permanent refrigeration installation. | Supply, storage, temperature control, and recurring cost of ice. |
| Self-contained tub with cooling system | Compact set, regulation and connections grouped. | Noise, unit ventilation, repairability, and necessary space around the block. |
| Tub with remote technique | Architectural integration and separation of the user area. | Technical room, network lengths, insulation, and lot coordination. |
| Custom-made tub | Dimensions, access, and finishes adapted to the location. | Studies, building interfaces, scope of services, and documented acceptance. |
"Plug and play" does not mean "without preparation". You must always know the electrical supply, the required support, heat rejection, drainage, and maintenance clearances. Ask for the installation plan before ordering, not at delivery. Models and realizations are presented in our cold plunge collection.
Seat, depth, and ease of exit
Try the geometry or examine a dimensioned plan: leg space, step-over height, support position, possibility of exiting without help. A great depth is not an advantage in itself. The design must allow for an immediate exit and take into account the targeted users and, in establishments, the applicable accessibility requirements.
Stainless steel, acrylic, or membrane: how to compare materials?
Evaluate the whole tub–assemblies–finish–maintenance, not just the material name. A well-designed surface must be inspectable and cleanable. No material dispenses with a hygiene procedure, and the lifespan of a tub is not deduced from a commercial label.
| Material | Possible assets | Pre-purchase checks |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Welded manufacturing, dimensional adaptation, visual continuity of the surface. | Exact shade, welds, finish, water quality, and authorized maintenance products. |
| Acrylic or composite shell | Molded shapes, integrated seats, choice of finishes according to the manufacturer. | Shell support, chemical compatibility, possible repairs, and outdoor durability. |
| Flexible membrane or inflatable structure | Easier transport and storage depending on the model. | Resistance, stability, access to folds, storage conditions, and replaceable parts. |
| Wood or mineral cladding | Integration into the architectural language of the site. | Separate identification of the watertight tank, insulation, and access to the technical equipment. |
What 316L stainless steel really brings
316L stainless steel is a common grade in stainless steel pools; it allows for welded structures and custom details. However, its suitability must be confirmed for the water, treatment products, and the project environment. The "marine" designation does not, on its own, authorize any water chemistry.
A suitable stainless steel surface is easy to clean, but it is not inherently antibacterial: deposits or biofilms can form if maintenance is insufficient. For more information, see our guide on stainless steel metallurgy in swimming pools.
Usage, location, technology: have your cold bath studied using plans or photos of the site.
How to assess the cooling unit without relying solely on the minimum temperature?
Ask for a cooling capacity suited to the conditions of your project. Electrical power, refrigeration capacity, and a horsepower rating do not describe the same thing: the first indicates instantaneous consumption, the second the amount of heat extracted per unit of time.
Ask for the specified air temperature, target water temperature, useful volume, insulation, and stated time to reach temperature. Performance measured in a climate-controlled room should not be assumed to be identical on an exposed terrace in summer.
Reaching temperature and maintenance: two different requirements
Cooling a tank after filling requires extracting an initial amount of heat. Maintaining the setpoint then depends on continuous inputs: ambient air, sunlight, piping, opening the cover, water renewal, and users. Ask therefore for two distinct pieces of information: the preparation time after filling and the expected operation during normal use.
Insulation and condensation
Insulation concerns the tank, the cover, and the networks. A cold wall or pipe condenses when its surface is below the dew point of the air: the continuity of the insulation and protection against steam must be addressed, not just adding thickness around the pool. The cover must be manageable on a daily basis and have storage; an insulating cover is not necessarily a safety device.
What hygiene equipment should be required?
Cooling, filtration, and disinfection serve different functions: a cooler does not guarantee the microbiological quality of the water. The supplier must explain the hydraulic circuit, the chosen treatment method, the controls to be carried out, and the procedures for cleaning and renewal.
Do not reduce the comparison to the micron rating of a cartridge. Ask for the filtration surface, access to the filter, expected flow losses, and the replacement procedure. The presence of UV or an ozonator does not allow you to conclude that the entire volume of water remains controlled between two treatment passes.
In French collective use, the device must be designed within the applicable framework, notably the technical provisions set by the decree of December 19, 2025. No "chemical-free" or "water kept for several months" slogan replaces a project-by-project verification. Our guide on the treatment and filtration of water in stainless steel pools presents the overall approach.
To choose concretely, ask for a demonstration: remove the filter, access the areas to be cleaned, drain according to the planned procedure, identify the sampling points, and check the alarms. Maintenance must be feasible in the space actually available.
Where can a cold bath be installed?
Garden, indoor, and floor terrace installations are conceivable, subject to checking the constraints specific to the site. The choice of material never validates the support, the networks, or the safety of use on its own.
| Installation | To check first |
|---|---|
| Outdoor | Sun exposure, runoff, plant debris, winter conditions; cooling unit compatible with the outdoors and clearances in its manual respected. |
| Indoor | Splashes, wet floors, condensation, heat rejection from the unit, ventilation, and possible intervention on a leak without damage to neighboring rooms. |
| Floor or rooftop | Loads supported by the structure, supports, transmission to the building, routing, and validation by a structural design office. |
On a floor, for mass calculation purposes, 500 liters of water represent approximately 500 kg, to which the tank, equipment, and users are added. This calculation is not a structural validation: the design office must check the loads and their transmission to the building. Our guide on rooftop pools explains why these interfaces are addressed from the design stage.
What budget to plan and how to compare two quotes?
Compare an installed and usable cost, not two tank prices. Without a common technical configuration and scope, a market range is of little use. For a custom-made cold bath, the budget is established by quote; an aesthetic option may weigh less than an adaptation of the building or a treatment suited to shared use.
| Item | To include or identify separately | Question for the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Pool | Tank, structure, finish, supports, and access accessories. | Does the price correspond to the requested dimensions and useful volume? |
| Cooling and insulation | Unit, regulation, cover, insulation, and accessories. | What performance is guaranteed under the project conditions? |
| Hydraulics and hygiene | Filtration, treatment, measurements, network, and maintenance points. | Is the intended use explicitly taken into account? |
| Work and logistics | Studies, support, power supply, drainage, transport, and handling. | Who performs each connection and what reservations remain? |
| Commissioning | Tests, adjustments, manuals, training, and technical file. | What results and documents will be handed over at acceptance? |
| Operation | Electricity, water, consumables, controls, maintenance, and parts. | On what assumptions does the annual projection rest? |
Assess consumption without inventing an annual cost
A serious estimate indicates the site, the setpoint, the opening time, the use of the cover, and the water renewal. To calculate an electrical cost from a measurement, multiply the recorded kWh by your kWh price. Do not multiply the nominal power of the compressor by 24 hours: its operation depends on the regulation and thermal loads.
Read the guarantees by component
The tank, cooling unit, pumps, and probes do not necessarily have the same contractual coverage. Ask for exclusions, maintenance conditions, travel, labor, and after-sales contact person to be specified.
If you are considering combining a hot pool with the cold bath, a single tank does not provide both simultaneously: then compare with our stainless steel spas or our Nordic baths, to be designed as two separate pieces of equipment.
What controls to plan before accepting the cold bath?
The acceptance must verify the agreed operation and provide the means to operate the installation. Prepare with the supplier a short list of measurable criteria.
| Control | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Installation and access | Supports compliant with the project, clear entry and exit, maintained technical access. |
| Operation tests | Watertightness, circulation, and regulation checks according to the agreed program. |
| Alarm scenarios | Procedure to follow explained in case of failure or unusual value. |
| Maintenance | Written procedures, compatible products, and demonstration of standard operations. |
| Handed-over file | Manuals, component references, guarantees, and after-sales service contact details. |
Frequently asked questions about choosing a cold bath
Do you need a cold bath that reaches a very low temperature?
No. A low minimum temperature demonstrates neither its usefulness for your goal nor the overall quality of the product. Compare stability, test conditions, maintenance, and safety of access before the minimum value.
Does the cold bath replace a cryotherapy cabin?
Not in the sense of a proven equivalence: these are distinct techniques, whose temperatures are not comparable. The choice must focus on a precise goal, audience, and operating conditions.
Should you take a cold bath after every weight training session?
This is not a general rule. A study observed a blunting of certain muscle adaptations with repeated immersion immediately after exercise; if muscle gain is your goal, discuss the place of cold with your coaching staff.
How long should you stay in a cold bath?
This guide does not provide a universal duration. The guidelines must take into account the person, the context, and the supervision; immediate exit takes precedence over a timed goal, and medical advice is mandatory in case of doubt about their fitness.
Does a stainless steel cold bath require maintenance?
Yes, like any installation: maintenance of the tank and the water. Stainless steel has no disinfection function, and Steel and Style stainless steel pools are not compatible with salt electrolysis; they operate with chlorine or active oxygen, UV as a complement if needed.
What information should be sent to obtain an accurate quote?
A plan, photos, desired dimensions, private or professional use, attendance, technical location, available access, and connections. Also specify your timeline and project budget.
